Elaine (Zafiriou) Liakos, a Highlands resident, died February 5, 2014, at home, in the company of her loving family, after a courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer, aged 65 years. She was the beloved wife of Peter A. Liakos, with whom she would have celebrated 34 wonderful years of marriage on July 12th. Born in Rockland, Maine, January 16, 1949, a daughter of the late Paul L. and Mary (Economou) Zafiriou. She received her early education in the Rockland school system and graduated from Rockland High School with the Class of 1967. Elaine furthered her education at the Lowell State Teachers College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1971. A gifted artist and talented teacher, Mrs. Liakos began her career at the Daley School teaching art. Later, she continued to teach elementary classes at the Varnum School for many years, until she retired in 1986. Elaine enjoyed traveling the world with Peter, spending summers at the beach with family, and going on shopping sprees with her sister. She was also a fabulous cook who enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family. A dog lover, she enjoyed caring for her spunky Pekingese dog, Tisha. She was a loving, dedicated mother to her four adopted children, a devoted wife, and a beloved teacher, who will always be remembered for living her all too short life with remarkable grace and dignity. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Alexis D. Liakos, Genya M. Liakos, Lenya P. Liakos and Ruslan A. Liakos, all of Lowell; a sister, Alicia Suomela of Hudson, NH; a granddaughter, Lyla Sophia Liakos; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Peter Zafiriou. Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, on Sunday from 2 to 6 PM. Her Funeral Service will be held at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Fr. John Sarantos Way, Lowell, on Monday at 10 AM. Interment in Westlawn Cemetery.
