Eastham, MA Joseph H. Rego Sr., 88, of North Eastham, former long time resident of Hudson, died on Saturday, April 20th at the McCarthy Hospice Care Center in Sandwich. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia “Pat” (Slaman) Rego of North Eastham and was predeceased by his first wife Constance (Sullivan) Rego. Joseph was born and raised in Hudson, son of the late Joseph and Amelia (Garcia) Rego. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Hudson High School. He later attended William & Mary College where he received several degrees. Joseph was a WWII Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a former teacher at Hudson High School and also spent time as the high school Athletic Director. He spent many years as the Director of Public Works in Hudson and was a long time Civil and Land Engineer. Joseph served on the Hudson School Committee, Hudson Planning Board and spent time as the Hudson Town Manager. He was a life member of the Orleans-Eastham Lodge of Elks, member of the American Legion in Hudson, member of the Bonita Springs, FL Fraternal order of Eagles and member of the Moose Lodge of Marlboro. Besides spending most of his life serving the Hudson community, Joseph always felt fortunate to spending the winter months in Bonita Springs, FL with his wife Pat. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially at his fishing camp in Maine where his sons, grandsons and great grandson often joined him. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all of them. Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Katherine Davis and her husband Stephen of Hudson, Joseph H. Rego Jr. and his wife Denise of Brewster, Michael J. Rego and his wife Maryann of Hudson, Richard J. Rego of Island Pond, VT; his step-children, Anthony Donovan of New Hampshire, Richard Bigley and his wife Theresa of Hudson, Paula Redden of South Berwick, ME and Robert J. Redden and his wife Michelle of Northboro. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and several step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Arlene Cahill and his step-son Frank Donovan. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 10:00 a.m. in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson. Hudson, MA Ronald G. Blood, 65, of Hudson, died on Thursday, April 18th at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen (McGrane) Blood of Hudson. Ronald was born in Framingham, son of the late George “Jeep” and Ruth (Garcia) Blood. He was a graduate of Hudson High School. Prior to being stricken ill, he was employed by Fafard Companies of Ashland for 30 years as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He served proudly in the U.S. Army, 82nd Engineers from 1966 to 1969 and is a Vietnam Veteran. Ronald was a life member and two time past Commander of the VFW Post 1027, Hudson. Besides his highly proficient operating of heavy equipment, Ronald was known for his pride and passion of the VFW and served on many committees, boards and was the Building Maintenance Supervisor. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Kenneth Blood and his wife Fatima of Hudson, Kimberly Andrews and her husband Anthony of Hudson, Ronald Blood Jr. and his wife Andrea of Hudson; his 8 grandchildren, Katelyn, TJ, Kaysha, Mackenzie, Cameron, Danica, Ryan and Brady and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his two sisters, Barbara Sawyer and her husband Ronald of Hudson, Mary Jane Riccardi and her husband Bob of Chula Vista, CA and his brother, John Blood and his wife Mary of Hudson. He was the brother of the late Janie Blood. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 22nd at 10:30 a.m. in the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Hudson, MA Joyce May (Edwards) Hook, 78, of Hudson, formerly of New Hampshire, died on Monday, April 15th at her residence in Hudson surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Hook of Dalton, NH. Joyce was born in Lisbon, NH, daughter of the late Arthur O. and Etta M. (Hiskey) Edwards. She resided in New Hampshire until moving to Hudson in 2006. She worked for the Odley Construction Co. and Midway Construction Co. in New Hampshire as a flag person for many years until her retirement. She was an active member of Grace Baptist Church in Hudson, member of the Hudson Amvet’s Auxilliary, member of the Hudson Senior Center and member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aries #2629 in New Hampshire. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Carroll R. Brunelle of Bethlehem, NH, Cregg E. Brunelle of Hudson, MA, Christine J. McGuigan of Hudson, MA; her step-children, Gordon Hook of Littleton, NH, Richard Hook of Maine and Valerie Wright of Vermont. She is also survived by her 21 loving grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and her many extended family members. She was predeceased by her grandson, Kenneth Brunelle. Though she loved all her Grandchildren with all her heart, Charlotte was outstanding in her response to her very sick grandma, in her last struggling days. Hudson, MA Octavio “Lara” Da Fraga, 75, of Hudson, died on Sunday, April 14th at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center in Marlboro. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eileen (Bush) Da Fraga of Marlboro. Octavio was born and raised in Chaves, Portugal, son of the late Manuel Pereira and Isaura Da Fraga. He has been a long time resident of Hudson and worked as a chef for several local restaurants over the years including the Hudson Portuguese Club. He was a member of the Hudson Portuguese Club and member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson. He was an avid and loyal fan of the Sporting of Lisbon Soccer Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sisters, Izolete Da Fraga and Maria Da Fraga, both of Portugal; his two sisters in-law, Kate Lacouture of Illinois, Margaret Bush of Boston and his brother in-law, Robert Bush of Southboro. He is also survived by his godson, Daniel Coutinho of Connecticut and his very close friends whom he considered family, Ilidio Coelho and family of Berlin, Manuel Coutinho and family of Connecticut and Acasio Silva of Hudson. Hudson, MA Cheryl L. (Woodworth) Prashaw, 52, of Hudson, passed away with her loving family by her side on Sunday, April 14th at UMASS Memorial Healthcare, University Campus in Worcester. She is survived by her husband of 28 years Lynn B. Prashaw of Hudson. Cheryl was born in Framingham and is survived by her parents, Harris Woodworth of Marlboro and Bette (McLellan) Smith, wife of the late Kermit Smith of Ashland. She has been a long time resident of Hudson and was a 1978 graduate of Assabet Valley Technical High School. She was currently employed as a bus driver by McCarthy Bus Lines of Hudson. Cheryl truly enjoyed and also took great pride in transporting her students over the past 10 years. She had a unique ability to make them special in her life, earning the respect of both her students and their families. They will truly miss her. Prior to her job with the bus company, she spent 20 plus years at the Butcher Wax Co. in Marlboro. Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by her two loving sons, Brandon and Trevor Prashaw of Hudson; her three sisters, Cindy Durkee of Franklin, Wendy Donahue of Marlboro and Betty Pratt of Westboro. She is also survived by her many relatives, nieces and nephews, and close friends. Cheryl had many interests in her life, she enjoyed riding on the back of her husband’s Harley Davidson Motorcycle and they always looked forward to the several motorcycle charity ride events annually. She enjoyed relaxing and sunbathing on an ocean beach, especially vacationing at Old Orchard Beach, Maine with the family and the many day trips to Hampton Beach, NH. She enjoyed shopping at yard sales, taking trips to Twin River Casino in Rhode Island and cruising in her corvette. Most of all she cherished time with her family and the love she received from her two German Shepherds she passionately cared for, “Wolf” who died in Sept. of 2012 and currently “Brody”. Her kind and loving spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Hudson, MA Joseph D. Haley Jr., 72 of Hudson, died on Friday, April 12th at his home surrounded by his loving family after losing his battle with cancer. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph D. Haley and Gertrude E. (Gately) Haley. He moved to Hudson in 1952, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was a member of the Hudson High School Class of 1959. He was employed by the former Washington Street Motors, R.S. Lamson and Sons and the former Bar Lunch of Hudson. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years Marcia K. (Mealey) Haley; his son Joseph D. Haley, III; his daughter Shanna Haley; his grandson Christopher J. Haley who was the love of his life and was affectionately referred to by Chris as “Bumpa” and his two step-granddaughters, Lauren and Becca. He is also survived by his brother Thomas J. Haley and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sarah A. Haley in 1989. Joe was an avid history buff, specifically with anything pertaining to World War II. He was a diehard Boston sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and Patriots. His favorite pastime and greatest joy was spending time with his grandson Chris. For the past seven years, Joe had nearly perfect attendance at every hockey, baseball and lacrosse game for Chris as well as attending many practices. We will miss his quick wit, sense of humor and kind heart. (Young) Snow of Hudson. Rod was born and raised in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland, son of the late Charles Snow and survived by his mother, Amy (Payne) Snow of Newfoundland. He has resided in Hudson the past 30 plus years and was currently employed by One Beacon Insurance Co. of Canton as a software programmer for many years. Besides spending time with his family, Rod enjoyed his frequent motorcycle rides with his wife Monica and also their shared interest in taking trips to the National Parks. He was an avid skier, enjoying the downhill slopes of Wachusett Mountain and the cross country trails at the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury. He enjoyed jogging, especially at Gates Pond and was a member of the Fitchburg Table Tennis Club Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his two daughters, Angela Snow and her husband Osama Youssef of Utah, Theresa Snow of Chelsea and his son, Charles Snow of Somerville. Hudson, MA Nancy (Glynn) Higgins, 83, of Hudson, died Easter Sunday, March 31st, at Coleman House in Northborough, MA, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the loving wife for 56 years, of the late Robert D. Higgins of Hudson, MA who died in 2012. She was a life long resident of Hudson. She was born in Clinton, MA, daughter of the late Mary Bell (McIntyre) and William L. Glynn, Sr. She was the sister of the late William L. Glynn, Jr. and Judith (Glynn) Ross Plouffe. Nancy was a 1947 graduate of Hudson High School and member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson. Her first job was as a PBX operator at Sandoz Corp in Hudson. Later she worked as a waitress at the Lisbon Club then moved on to the Lance Corp, Hudson Lock, the office of Optometrist Dr. Richard N. Curtis, Boston Furniture Co. and finally to the Hudson Senior Center where she worked for 13 years. After her retirement, she was a member of the Hudson Council On Aging for nearly 12 years. Nancy was a devoted wife and mother. She never had a driver’s license, was an avid walker and never had a job she could not walk to. She also loved to bake, read and do crossword puzzles. She is survived by her son, Timothy Higgins and his wife Marylou of Allenstown, NH; her three daughters, Colleen Higgins and her companion Henry Wheeler Jr. of Hudson, MA, Marykate Griffin and her husband William of Sudbury, MA and Maureen Avery and her husband Scott of Ashburnham, MA. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Kou Meaghan Higgins of Novi, MI, Robert Higgins and his wife Carrie of Northfield, NH, Kyle Griffin and his wife Katelyn of Lowell, MA, Bridget Griffin of Charlestown, MA and Owen Griffin of Sudbury, MA. Also her four great grandchildren, Jackson and Zoey Higgins, Brooklyn Griffin and Remington Higgins. Champine, George A. age 78 of Hudson lost his long battle with Leukemia on March 28. He was born in Fairmont, Minnesota, oldest child of Floyd and Genevieve Champine. He graduated from Fairmont High School. George earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics and a Ph.D. in Information Systems all from the University of Minnesota. In 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Nelson. George was a pioneer in computer technology. He was one of the first 2000 programmers in the world and he continued on the forefront of information technology throughout his professional career. As a graduate student he began work for Univac in St. Paul Minnesota, where he wrote most of the software for the world’s first airborne computer. This computer used real-time data from radar to control the rear turret machine guns on a heavy bomber. He also led teams that developed software for the world’s first ground-based digital missile guidance system, and computer-controlled radar. He made major computer architecture contributions to the Univac 1100/60 computer. George was very active in the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology Alumni Society and was president during 1979-1980. He was promoted to Director of Research at Univac, Blue Bell Pennsylvania where he managed 146 researchers. He subsequently left Univac and became Senior Vice President of Engineering at Vydec, a subsidiary of Exxon Enterprise Inc. George and Barbara lived in Short Hills, New Jersey at this time. Later he joined Digital Equipment Corp. in the Boston area and they moved to Acton, Massachusetts. At Digital he pioneered high performance graphical workstations. In 1984 Digital assigned him to lead their research team at Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp in Austin, Texas, and in 1986 to become Associate Project Director of Project Athena at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He published a book describing the project. George and Barbara moved to Stow at this time. He subsequently became Director of Technology for Information Systems at Digital, and when Compaq Computer acquired Digital he became Director of Technology and Architecture. Shortly after Hewlett Packard acquired Compaq in 2002 he retired at age 68, and George and Barbara moved to Quail Run in Hudson, MA. In retirement he taught computer classes, maintained websites for four non-profits, and fixed computer problems for Quail Run residents. As a volunteer at the Harvard astronomy department he photographed 80,000 pages of astronomy telescope data and was instrumental in setting up the bar code system in identifying astronomy images. George was on the board of directors for the Hudson Historical Society and The Photographic Historical Society of New England. During George’s working career, he taught many college courses part-time, including: Physics at Hamline University in St. Paul, Project management at the University of Minnesota, and Computer Graphics at the University of Texas, MIT in Cambridge, and the University of Massachusetts/Lowell. He has written more than 30 papers published nationally and has authored three books in the computer field. He also wrote four books about life in southern Minnesota and his home town of Fairmont. He was highly respected on a worldwide basis as a speaker on advances in computer science and technology. His interests were photography, family history, electronic music, playing the organ, motorcycling, canoeing, camping, astrophysics, travel, and jogging. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Barbara; children Renee Olson of San Jose CA, Mark Champine and wife Lori of Westford MA, and Lisa Paton of Hudson MA. He is survived by seven grandchildren, brother John Champine and wife Lynn of Prior Lake MN, and was predeceased by a brother Charles. At his request a Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Minnesota. He will be buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont MN. Hudson, MA Edward M. Gillen, 69, of Hudson, formerly of Pittsburg, PA, died unexpectedly, Thursday, March 14th at Marlboro Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth D, (Lang) Gillen of Hudson. Ed was born and raised in Pittsburg, PA, son of the late Michael and Eleanor (Adamiak) Gillen. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force in Okinawa, Japan. Ed currently owned and operated New England Refinishing Co. in Hudson for 25 plus years. His passion and unique talent for refinishing furniture was appreciated by the many customers he served. Prior to starting his refinishing business, he was employed as a Data Center Manager for Digital Equipment Corp. from 1969 to 1987 in Maynard and Marlborough. He was an active member of the BNI, Marlboro Chapter. He has resided in Hudson the past 23 years. Ed was an avid Pittsburg Steeler fan and also a NASCAR Racing fan. He enjoyed listening to the oldies music of the 50’s and 60’s and loved being an amateur D.J. spinning his 45’s for family and friends. Ed used his skills and joy of cooking to prepare special culinary delights for his family and friends. He will certainly be missed by his family, friends and customers he brought joy to by his craft of refinishing their cherished furniture. Besides his wife, he leaves his loving in-laws who considered Edward as a brother and member of their family; his nieces and nephews who will miss his playful humor and wit, and his many friends. He was the brother of the late Michael B. Gillen Jr. of Pittsburg. Family and friends may attend calling hours on Thursday, March 21st from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a service and celebration of Ed’s life at 7:30 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749. Hudson Elizabeth M. “Bethy” Filipe, 38, of Hudson, died on Wednesday, March 13th at MetroWest Medical Center, Framingham Union Hospital. She is survived by her loving parents, Eugene R. and Theresa (MacLellan) Filipe of Hudson. Bethy was born in Marlboro and was a life long resident of Hudson. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Hudson High School. She was employed at Papa Gino’s Restaurant in Hudson for many years and was a member of the Greater Marlboro Programs, Inc. She was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson. Bethy enjoyed several hobbies including playing cribbage. She looked forward to spending time with her family and her loving and caring spirit will truly be missed by all who knew her. Besides her parents, she is survived by her 9 siblings, Joan Filipe of Worcester, Mary Mathews of Hudson, Lorraine Plummer and her husband Dan of North Carolina, Cathy Ricci and her husband Paul of Texas, Bernadette Keefe and her husband Al of Maine, Ellen MacGilvray and her husband Richard of Hudson, Virgina Benson and her husband David of North Carolina, Daniel Filipe and his wife Karen of Texas and Ruth Matthews and her husband Glen of Leominster. She was the sister of the late Linda Filipe who died in 1984 and is also survived by her many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 20th at 9:00 a.m. in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning Street, Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery, Hudson. Family and friends may attend calling hours on Tuesday, March 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central Street, Hudson, MA 01749.
